I’m river people.

Fri, 12/26/2008 - 13:31

I was just struck with the idea of using Google Maps to see the town my family originated from in Germany.

I was delighted to discover that the arial map looks strikingly like the arial photo I took of the Green family homestead in the US.

Looks like I’m genetically predisposed to living near rivers, or it’s a lucky coincidence. I wonder if there’s catfish in the Bonner like there is in the Wapsi.

Happy holidays from the Wadsgreens. Also, there are other holiday photos of us, even more silly.

Well, no. This one’s the silliest. I’m playing Stella like a uke, and we’re all moving a paw!

Another positive spin to the financial crisis

Tue, 12/23/2008 - 11:13

I’m frakking Pollyana with the financial crisis, huh?

Here’s the New York Times headline:
For Craft Sales, the Recession Is a Help

Will people learn that making things can personally satisfying (in addition to being less expensive) instead of buying badly made, mass reproduction, maybe toxic, less geniune gifts.

It’s a good thing I don’t really celebrate Christmas gifting, because I would want to knit everyone something. As it stands, I’m a good three years behind. I believe I owe Clucker and Richard Urban both a set of mitten-gloves. Also, who’s stopped smoking this year? A? You get mittens.

(not mittens, exactly, but it’s the most recent thing I’ve finished)

Let’s see. We’re going to need some fortifications. Oh, no wait. We’re
fine.

Tim and Tyler (our rad temp) are actually organizing the LibraryThing
library. This means that although everything is miscellaneous, it’s
nice to see the O’Reilly books all on the same shelf.

A positive spin on the financial crisis

Tue, 12/16/2008 - 12:33

I was driving to Portland this morning, and listening to NPR. There was an interview with a 50-year-old woman who was describing how her retirement fund was down 30%, and she wouldn’t be able to retire when she thought she was going to be able to.

That made me thing, might the lack of retirement funds drive retirees to living with their families? Might this crisis make separate parts of families merge? Instead of living in a summer home in Arizona, will retirees volunteer part time at their public library, and hang out with the grand kids after school?

I know not everyone has a good relationship with their parents, but I would love it if my parents lived with me. They’re smart, funny, and good company. They have solid genes, and should stay in good health for a long time. We can watch old movies and talk about current events, and we’ll all be happy.

Flickr overload

Wed, 12/10/2008 - 13:47

I’ve been scanning in photos from my pre-digital days, and uploading them to Flickr using an uploading app. This means that I’m bombarding my otherwise even-paced Flickr feed.

The upside? Never-before-seen pictures!

(This is the first picture Jason ever saw of me - before he met me even. He thought my hair was red.)
