blackout stories... let's hear them.
i helped two of my friends find each other in brooklyn b/c they couldn't get in touch with each other. of course, had i visited a week later, i would have cried and been stuck in midtown. hmmm. my story sucks.
Posted by superlizz at August 15, 2003 09:15 PMI was on a train from Albany to NYC, all the sudden I woke up and we where sitting in the Poughkipsee (sp) train station. Well we sat there for another 10 hours. And then around 3:30 in the morning, we started moving again. i figured that if we were heading into NYC, they must have restored power. I was sorely mistaken. Penn station was fairly empty except for people lining the perimeter asleep on the floor. When we got outside. The police had set up generators to give some light in the streets around the station. The steps to the post office on 8th ave. were completely full of people sleeping. We wondered around for a few minutes trying to find a cab. Most cabs actually parked around the station were out of gas. After finding one and negotiating a fair ($10 to go south 30 blocks), we were off. It was definately very bizaaro seeing all of these streets completely dark.
I am glad to report that we finally got power around 1 pm this afternoon and have already indulged in a slice of Ray's Pizza (famous, original, original famous, not to be confused with any other Ray's, 1964, 1958, the one and only)
Jason and Win have pictures.
Posted by: gs at August 15, 2003 10:36 PMShort version: I spent all night (until about 8 this AM) by myself in our lab, cycling 6 -80 degree C freezers through 2 emergency backup outlets. I switched freezers every half hour. Unfortunately, switching freezers entails moving the whole thing, and they weigh ~300 pounds. Wheee!
Posted by: e lo at August 16, 2003 12:13 AMI didn't lose any power... except for earning power... got laid off about an hour before the lights went out. Got to go home and watch it all on the news though. MSNBC were just about creaming themselves with excitement.
